I thought about all the jobs I had. The longest I stayed in a company was nine years and the one I just left, I stayed for six months. I’d been through totally different type of companies and different work environments. While writing this, I’m also analyzing what made me happy and what made me unhappy, my successes, my failures and what people said about me. I realized a few things. That damn test given by JPA (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awan) before I entered a university was quite accurate. I believe they gave me Industrial Engineering as my major based on that test, although I wanted to do Business Management. I realized that I am an Industrial Engineer. But I also realized I’m NOT the Industrial Engineer as what being understood by most companies in Malaysia or in Asia. Here when they hear Industrial Engineer, they’ll think about someone who’s working in a manufacturing company… Which is not true. A great thing about being an Industrial Engineer is you can be whatever you want. You can be anywhere because in general, our job is TO MAKE THINGS BETTER… Anything. We live by the continuous improvement principle. I love this tag line from the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE), “Engineers Make Things. Industrial Engineers Make Things BETTER”. Nine more days, I’ll turn 36 years young. In what area I’d like to make my life and others better? I’ve been having problem focusing on one thing only. But this time I must choose one thing I want to do. One thing that’ll I’m sure will make me happy. At first it was kinda blur. But there were many signs or omens that direct me to this one thing. DOGS. This is the only consistent thing that I’ve been learning about since I have dogs in my life. And from what I see around me, I strongly believe that they should be treated much much better than they are now. Especially here in Malaysia. I believe that we must educate the people about how amazing dogs are. If we can show people that by being a responsible dog owner, dogs won’t cause any trouble to our community, I believe people would start to be more acceptable to dogs. Most people are scared of dogs because they always thought that dogs will chase and bite them. Neighbors always complain about noisy dog or aggressive dog or owners leave their dog’s place dirty and smelly. The more super awesome dog owners available to show to the community that dogs are actually awesome, I believe the less people would complain about dogs. Being an engineer is awesome but even if I become the CEO of a company that is not mine, the fact is my salary won't be enough to have a life I dream of with my family.
